ASH HFFTP Awarded Institutions

University of California San Diego UCSD

"We 鈥 the 鈥淗eme Team鈥 at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) - feel fortunate to participate as a training site for Classical Hematology as part of the HFFTP Consortium Alliance. We are proud to offer an innovative curriculum, tailored to the modern needs for interdisciplinary Hematology involvement with cross-disciplinary rotations, educational opportunities, and scholarly career development. Innovation is inherent to the evolving landscape of experts needed for gene therapy and molecularly targeted disease-modifying treatments in hemophilia and hemoglobinopathies; or the need for experts in venous thromboembolism related to malignancy, inherited conditions, chronic thromboembolic hypertension, and other disorders. Opportunities are manifold and can be tailored to the Fellow鈥檚 interests, including, but not restricted to, a career in the aforementioned areas of Hemostasis/Thrombosis or Hemoglobinopathies. After the two-year program (ACGME-accredited), Fellows are eligible for Hematology Boards, with the option to add a 3rd year focused on Coagulation (Hemostasis/Thrombosis) Medicine, funded by the Hemophilia & Thrombosis Treatment Center, or focused on specific research with mentored support for grant application available through multiple conduits."

"The University of California San Diego is pleased to announce the availability of its two-year Hematology Fellowship program, in addition to its distinctive dual fellowship in Hematology and Medical Oncology. With a storied history of training the next generation of Hematologists and Medical Oncologists, UC San Diego's program, established in 1994, has graduated over 150 board-certified specialists. The program boasts a diverse range of training environments, ranging from a tertiary NCI-designated cancer center to a more community-based setting at its Hillcrest location, affording fellows exposure to a multifaceted patient population, including individuals of diverse ethnicities. UC San Diego takes pride in the flexibility of its training program, which allows fellows to tailor their experience to their individual research and professional interests. Hematology fellows will also have the opportunity to foster lasting professional relationships through close interaction with Hematology-Oncology classmates."

We welcome the opportunity to introduce our ACGME-accredited two-year Fellowship track in classical hematology. Designed to meet the national need for classical hematologists, the new program will focus on bleeding and clotting disorders, anemias, hemoglobinopathies, myeloproliferative neoplasms, and white blood cell and platelet disorders. The curriculum includes rotations on the inpatient hematology consult services at the university hospitals, flow cytometry, hematopathology, the special coagulation laboratory, outpatient continuity clinic in classical hematology, and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (both inpatient and outpatient rotations) to gain exposure to hematological malignancies. We offer an innovative curriculum catering to the ever-growing need for interdisciplinary and consultative hematology engagement. There are opportunities to participate in cross-disciplinary clinics with interventional radiology and pulmonary/critical care, obstetrics/gynecology, apheresis and cell therapy. Training in point-of-care ultrasound to manage venous thromboembolism, hemophilic bleeding, and other hematological questions at the bedside is provided. We also offer training in global hematology at our twinning site in Maputo, Mozambique. For those interested in research, there are multiple projects ongoing, with the opportunity to design a focus track tailored to the fellow鈥檚 evolving scholarly interests. Graduates will be eligible to take the Hematology Board Examination.
