HIP Medical Student Award

The ASH Hematology Inclusion Pathway (HIP) Medical Student Award provides medical students from communities underrepresented in hematology in the US and Canada with a stipend to conduct hematologic research under the mentorship of an ASH member. Recipients of this award will also receive a stipend to attend the ASH annual meeting to present their research.  

As part of the ASH Hematology Inclusion Pathway program, the Medical Student Award aims to create inclusivity and expand the program鈥檚 reach to the next generation of hematologists.

Program Benefits
Participants conducting a flexible research project can receive up to $5,000 in total funding to complete a research project and travel to the ASH annual meeting. Participants conducting a yearlong research project can receive up to $42,000 in total funding. See Additional Benefit Information
Research Project Options
The HIP Medical Student Award has multiple research project options available including an eight to 12-week flexible project or a yearlong project. See Research Project Option Details
Program Mentorship
Each HIP Medical Student Award applicant must have a research mentor or be matched with a mentor who is an ASH member in good standing. Once accepted to the program, participants are paired with a career-development mentor. See Additional Mentorship Information
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or Canada, J1 Visa holders, or have Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status. Applicants must be enrolled in a MD, DO, or MD-PhD medical school program, and demonstrate how they meet the goals of HIP. See Additional Eligibility Requirements
Application Process and Required Materials
Applicants must include a personal statement, an NIH biographical sketch, an NIH biographical sketch of their mentor, a research proposal, and two letters of recommendation.  See Additional Information on Required Materials
Evaluation and Selection
Applications submitted by the deadline will be reviewed by the ASH HIP Study Section and accepted applicants and their mentors will receive official notification of acceptance by April/May. See Evaluation Criteria
