Hematology Inclusion Pathway
The ASH Hematology Inclusion Pathway (HIP), the successor program to the ASH Minority Recruitment Initiative (MRI), offers a comprehensive 13-year longitudinal career pathway of awards that strives to ensure that hematology reflects and serves the diverse world we live in – from medical students to mid-career professionals.
We are continuing to offer the awards and programs that have uplifted hematology professionals for the past 20 years— but the new HIP Initiative better aligns with ASH’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and reflects an evolving understanding of the communities that are underrepresented in hematology.
With HIP, we’re continuing to foster and empower a diverse new generation of leaders in hematology.

ASH has fostered and empowered a diverse new generation of leaders in hematology for more than 20 years.
Impact Report
Program Alumni and Participants
The program provides longitudinal support and encourages recipients to stay on the pathway and apply for progressive awards with the anticipated outcome of increased likelihood of retention in the field.
Of the 77 individuals who have received two or more awards, 25 have received progressive awards in hematology extending beyond medical school. This number is expected to increase as more recipients matriculate along the pathway.
Alumni of the program remain deeply engaged in ASH through volunteer leadership.
Forty-five alumni have served in 353 unique volunteer leadership roles within ASH, ranging from junior reviewers in an ASH study section and contributing editors for ASH publications, to standing committee members and chairs, to serving on ASH’s governing body, the ASH Executive Committee.
